Alright people! The past couple days have been flying by! But for the most part, I met this interesting dude by the name of Taka.
Yup you guessed it, he’s from japan. Well anyways, he is a mad famous DJ in japan and known to music heads internationally. He mostly creates and spins house music for parties and clubs and so on and so forth but he also has put together a few CD’s under the name DJ JUZU aka MOOCHY. He spins all types of music from dancehall to jazz to techno to hip hop. Whatever he feels suits the vibe..... So while he was planning his trip to hawaii..... he knew that the great kids at RELAX MAG had mad island connections so he gathered his info and flew to hawaii. His first stop in beautiful hawaii was a birthday party on oahu(as all of you read in his previous name-link). Then he made his way to Moku o Keawe! During his shuffle of information with Relax magazine my name and number some how came into the mix.
After he arrived in hilo and contacted me, we gots a talkin! He told me that he’s been working on a project for year or so now and was wondering if I could help him find some Cutural hawaiian chanters......... He’s been traveling the world(jamaica, vietnam, germany, cuba) recording ethnic chants and mixing them into house music........ interesting huh...... Normally I’m very protective of my culture and how its portrayed to the rest of the world but I really felt a respectful vibe from this guy. So I kept listening to his vision and offering my help. It turns out about two weeks ago while he was crate diggin in a japanese record shop he came across Ha’aku’i pele I Hawai’i. When he came to me he didn’t have any in depth idea of hula, my family or even sig zane designs. He didn’t even show me the record that he dug up... He just had the idea that he was gonna fly to hawai’i and record some hawaiian chants and sound... After we talked for an hour or so I told him that I’ll meet him later on in the night and in the mean time I’ll try and pick out some chanters for his tracks....
While he was out and about meeting other people during the day, he showed the album(Ha’aku’i pele I Hawai’i) to one of my japanese friends who is actually up on the whole hula/sz scene. And she was like “Where’d you get this?!!! and do you know that this is the family of the boy you just met!!!!”(must be on some destiny shit..... But he was super stoked to actually meet people that recorded the album that inspired his whole trip to hawaii in the first place!)
So we met up later that night at restaurant kaikodo to discuss some possibilities.....
To make a long story blog ready, I sign my mom and ulumauahi up to lace the house music with some chant vocals!
The recording went great and I cant wait to hear the finish product! Heres the pics of the whole process!!
Great DJ, great talent and great project........ Aloha Kuhao!
